Pros: This is great for practicing full bowing and giving tunes a belt without worrying about idle listeners thinking "when will he get that bit right?". Non musicians don't understand that there is a lot of repetition in practice.
Cons: None
Other: I have had no complaints in many hotels to date. I travel with work and take one of these with me. I have one of the all metal ones too. The metal one is quieter to the player does not grip the bridge as well well. I bought one as a gift because I have never practiced as much I do now that I got one of these things. I only wish I could have one for the concertina.

Pros: It works and it doesn't scratch the instrument. I have had no complaints about noise since I started using this metal and rubber mute. I had an all-rubber mute before, which worked, but the instrument was still audible in other rooms.
Cons: It perches high up on the bridge and is too stiff and tight to push down. This means that I can't see over it to where the bow is touching the strings. This wouldn't matter to an experienced player but as a beginner I can find the bow is in the wrong place and I haven't noticed because I can't see it.
Other: Once you mute the instrument to this extent the sound is inescapably pretty weird, so an all-rubber mute is better if you don't need to cut the sound right down.

Pros: Still enables you to produce a semblance of a tone despite substantially reducing the volume. Sits quite securely on bridge. Rubber coating is reassuring for protecting the instrument in case it falls off the bridge accidentally (hasn’t happened yet fortunately )
Cons: Not super quiet like a really heavy solid metal practice mute.
Other: Unless you need to reduce the volume of your instrument massively this mute is a good compromise. It dampens my violin enough for hotel room practice but at the same time you can still get some tone from the instrument. For ultimate muting effect where you have thin walls or want to practise late at night I would go for the pure metal one instead (this one is a heavy rubber coated mute)

Pros: Excellent practice mute, not too heavy, produces a dull but good quality sound, it has a plastic coating which lessons the chance of accidentally damaging the instrument.
Cons: None

Pros: This is an excellent mute, allows me to practise without the worry of disturbing the neighbours. Which in turn allows me to practise more often. The sound still comes through enough to know your playing the right notes and whether the violin is in or out of tune.
Cons: The only downside is having to dampen the sound of a beautiful instrument. Probably just as well for everyone else as I am only a beginner.
Other: Thanks to thestringzone.co.uk I have now made a number of purchases and have always been happy with the speed in which I received my items and look forward to using your services again soon.

Pros: This mute really dampens the volume of the violin but keeps the tone. Similar noise reduction to the Tonwolf. Essential for practicing in the home. Good fit on the bridge.
Cons: Can't think of any!

Pros: Definitely the most quiet of the many mutes I have tried and easily fits my fiddles. Well made and should last a lifetime.
Cons: Very heavy - but then it needs to be to be in order to absorb the bridge vibrations so not really a con as such.
Other: I mainly play by ear so lots of repetition when learning new tunes so this mute is a family favourite!
