'Ultra' cello practice mute
11 out of 12 found the following review helpful

Pros: This mute is easy to position and effective in dampening down the sound level. Also, its large size helps the beginner focus on their bowing technique. It’s good value in regards to performance and price.

Cons: Unfortunately the bass seems to reverberate a little but this could be down to the individuality of the instrument.

Other: If blocking out sound is imperative, I've found that a metal mute does this better (and perhaps with a little less bass reverberation) - although they are more expensive.

Inexpensive and effective practice aid
6 out of 6 found the following review helpful

Pros: The mute works well to attenuate the volume produced during practice, which is useful as I have close (though understanding!) neighbours. It's easy to mount, and to dismount too.

Cons: No contrary issues.

Other: It's not really an issue with the mute itself, but when I tune the strings with the mute mounted, I generally have to re-tune the strings when the mute is removed. My teacher says this is not uncommon, so it's merely something to be aware of.

Very muting mute
4 out of 5 found the following review helpful

Pros: Offers effective muting while still maintaining a bit of tone and resonance so you don't feel like you're practising on a piece of cheesewire. Makes me feel better about practising around flatmates.

Cons: Nothing - does what I need it to do

great for the neighbours
2 out of 2 found the following review helpful

Pros: great - cuts the volume in half without killing the tone of my cello too much, the neighbours are very grateful!

Cons: has created a killer of a wolf note that can't be moved/cured with any of the eliminators that I own.

Other: can't praise string zone high enough for their customer service

Disappointed

Pros: Don’t like this at all I’m afraid. Doesn’t fit well on my bridge. Totally useless for my cello.

Cons: Heavy and solid.

Other: we are sorry to hear the practice mute didnt suit. please feel free to make a return and we can refund you.

Worth it if you need one

Pros: Significantly lowered the volume of my cello Doesn't damage the instrument Doesn't get in the way of playing Can tune the sound level by how close to the strings it is

Cons: It was a little difficult to get on at first, but easier afterwards distorts the sound a bit

Other: Overall, I think this mute is definitely worth it if you need to lower the volume of your cello (e.g. due to neighbours). However, due to sound distortion I wouldn't use a mute if I didn't need one. That being said, I have been able to play cello for a lot longer as it is now much quieter
