Aluminium on natural gut. The new gut string from Pirastro. Warm, colourful sound. High level of tuning stability.
The modern gut cored string. Old sound, modern stability.
These incredible strings are the latest strings from Pirastro designed to combine the best qualities of synthetic cored strings with the traditional gut sound. True gut sound with plenty of volume plus excellent tonal stability. Recommended rosin: Oliv/Evah Pirazzi.
The gut core of Passione strings is manufactured, wound and polished in the traditional way, by hand. The core sound is full, round and warm, with a complex overtone spectrum combining brilliance and clarity and a great power of projection.
Passione strings possess a fascinating diversity of sounds, which allows musicians to alter their tone as desired. Big and powerful sound with very easy response on all levels of the dynamic range Passione strings have a significantly reduced playing in time compared to other traditional gut strings.
Pirastro gut string tensions are measured in units of PM (Pirastro Measurement) and refer to the diameter of the string. 1PM = 0.05mm, so gauge 14PM = 0.7mm diameter. The tension of the string varies by 3% for each gauge.
Gut cored Pirastro string. Please note that these strings are very delicate and have a shorter and unpredictable life span compared to other strings. We do not recommend their use by beginners or that they be fitted to instruments not set up by trained and experienced craftsmen.

Pros: I've had many strings over the years and the Passione set I recently put on my violin win hands down. Rich, powerful tone, stay in tune pretty well (for gut) and a lightning fast response. Just the ticket!
Cons: Nothing at all - except the price! But they are worth it.

Pros: I have used these for some years now and love the quality of tone.
Cons: I have used these strings now for some years and found them to be very good. Unfortunately, I think there may be a fault with the manufacture of these, since many of my colleagues and I have been been experiencing breakages after only a month or so of use. The strings seem to snap at the peg end at the start of the coloured winding. So far we have had this issue with the G stings mainly but also A and E.
Other: Excellent strings but on the pricey side. I hope that the problem is resolved soon with Pirastro or I’ll be forced to change to another brand.

if you pay extra, you will tell the difference.
Pros: Lovely warm Tone to it - very responsive Pleased with it over - all would buy again.
Cons: A bit on the expensive side - took a lot of tuning - needs tuning more often than strings that don't have a gut core.

Back to natural materials
Pros: I ordered these strings to see if natural gut strings had improved since I last used them, and to cut back on my plastic footprint. So far I have only replaced the D and the A. Although the tuning is less stable, I'm delighted with the strings. The sound is bright and ringing, which suits my violin, and the strings speak really easily, which is brilliant for the Mozart concerto I am preparing for a professional exam. They took about 2 weeks to mellow, and two months later they are still sounding vibrant and lively. They compare very favourably to the Gold label Evas and Obligato.
Cons: None

Better than Eudoxa
Pros: Soft warm tone. More resistant to temperature than previous past experience of Eudoxa. Slightly less stable in extreme conditions than the Obligato (which was the last one I was using on the A string)
Cons: Not as much sound as Obligato but see Pros .

Lovely strings, great sound and long lasting.
Pros: Love the sound these strings produce. Passione were fitted on my violin when I first played it and I have never used any others.
Cons: They do take a little more time to settle, but one soon adapts to their properties. They are also more susceptible to temperature and humidity changes, so will need tuning frequently. The benefits do outweigh the minor issues in terms of the sound produced.
Other: Being gut core, these strings do need a little more care, I have found that using a stretto humidifier is useful to keep them in good stable condition and help prevent them drying out.
