Pirastro Eudoxa is probably the world's best known string and has been a staple of many players over the last 60 years. It is a traditional covered gut string.
Nowadays these strings appeal mainly to players who value the unique tonal properties and playing feel of a traditional gut cored string and are prepared to accept the need for more regular tuning and their sensitivity to changes in climatic conditions.
The sheep gut core of Eudoxa strings is manufactured, wound and polished in the traditional way, by hand. Well balanced warm tone with a great diversity of sound. Low string tension and a comfortable left hand feeling ideal for orchestra, chamber music and studio takes.
Aluminium and silver on natural gut.

Pros: As with the A string, wonderful gut sound and fairly easy to play. Easy under the fingers.
Cons: If you're new to gut they will take some getting used to. The lower tension means they tend to "roll" under the fingers and can sometimes feel a bit soft under the bow. Definitely slower to respond, and you have to adjust your bow technique to compensate (Which is for the better, after playing on these I sound a lot better on steel)

Pros: Not as brash and squeeky as an uncovered gut D string, but works very well with a pure gut A string which is my preference - this is a beautiful combination. Smooth, rich and expressive.
Cons: None

Pros: Gorgeous string. Warm and pliable.
Cons: None
Other: Blends well with Oliv, Eudoxa and pure gut A strings and works well with Eudoxa G and C or G Eudoxa and Oliv C on my cello. This is my favourite D string, out of the gut core strings.
