Violin 5-String Set, 4/4, Medium Tension (plain steel E) | £82.98 |
* All strings are ball end, unless otherwise specified.
Multi stranded steel core strings. Medium tension.
Helicore violin strings are crafted with a multi-stranded steel core, resulting in optimal playability while producing a clear, warm tone. The smaller string diameter provides quick bow response. Premium quality materials combined with skilled workmanship produces strings known for excellent pitch stability and longevity.
Very popular string, particularly suited to electric instruments and those who prefer the bright, quick tone of metal strings.

Pros: Great tone and excellent value for your money
Cons: none
Other: The String Zone offer a great service with a very wide range of great strings and accessories. Their web site is easy to use and the delivery is quick and the postage charges are very resonable too.

Pros: The strings have made a big difference to the sound of my old Scottish fiddle - one built on 1876 by James Finlay of Padanarm, Forfar. Settled in very quickly and holding tuning well and give a good balance across the 4 strings.
Cons: Nothing so far.

Just the right sound for African music.
Pros: Put these strings on my very dark sounding fiddle to play at Africa Oye and they transformed it! Really pleased with the sound and response, just right for the music. My English folkie friends were impressed too.
Cons: They weren't quite as stable as Id'e hoped, but the weather was quite extreme

Mostly fine
Pros: The strings stay tuned even during substantial temperature changes, which is a big plus during concerts.
Cons: The open e string has a tendency to squeek during rapid string changes, which I never have had problems with before when using other brands.

Stable, clear and easy to play.
Pros: I bought two sets of Helicore, which I have used before. One set I put on my quiet, well behaved French fiddle, I like their stability, clear tone and quickness. They cheer my fiddle up and it sings out nicely. Of the steel strings I've tried I like these best.
Cons: I also put a set on a newly restored German fiddle, which turned out to be a loud and bright instrument and the Helicores sounded a little harsh, and the E string sounded a little fierce, at least playing in my front room. I will try synthetics next time on this fiddle but I like them on my little Frenchy.

The best steel string I've ever tried
Pros: The best steel string I've ever tried for clarity, richness of tone and responsiveness. If one wants to go for steel string for any reason (style of music, price, durability, etc) I'd definitely recommend them
Cons: In general, all the strings are slightly thinner than average, which is what gives you the extra-responsiveness, but the "disadvantage" is that the e can sound shrill on some instruments and some may want to replace it with a different one
