Very heavy metal practice mute for viola and violin. Chrome plated steel. For use when maximum muting is essential, for example, in hotel rooms, flats etc.

Very quiet but weighty.
Pros: Quietens the instrument to a level which makes it inaudible to students' neighbours. Actually improves tone when used with self-concious learners who 'tickle' the strings and bow too lightly.
Cons: Not much; chords are not always as quiet as single-note melody lines, but it still helps a great deal. It does add significant weight to the intrument and obscures the contact point where bow hair meets string. These are minor issues and would not prevent me from recommending this mute.
Other: I have owned one for ages and recommend these to all my students and other players who do not want to disturb others but want/need to practise.

Pros: I am keen to practice as much as I can but living in a flat makes that not so easy. The practice mute enables me to keep going without disturbing my neighbours!
Cons: It does make the violin a lot heavier which can take a bit of getting used to.
