Description

The original and best known synthetic cored string. Regarded as the reference standard for this type of string. Well adapted to give excellent playing properties on any instrument.

Dominant strings give a warm and clear sound which closely approximates to a traditional covered gut string. Tonally stable and easy to play on they suitable for all players beginner to professional.

Medium tension strings. For other tensions please click the link above.

NB The set 135 with aluminium wound E is the traditional and well known version of these strings. The aluminium winding being a more suitable choice for learners as it is easier to produce a clear sound without whistles or overtones. The set 135B features a plain Chrome plated steel E which will appeal to advanced players for its clarity and projection.

Aluminium E Set with ball end only. For loop end E set please order four individual strings.

Steel E set (135B) E has a loop end with removable ball to take out if required.

To check your instrument size measure the length of the back (LOB) excluding the 'button' which is the thumb shaped extension at the top where the neck is anchored. Old instruments can vary, if more than 1/2" over choose the next size up.

4/4 - LOB 356mm (14")

3/4 - LOB 330mm (13")

1/2 - LOB 305mm (12")

1/4 - LOB 280mm (11")

1/8 - LOB 254mm (10")

Using a loop end E? The use of a protector to prevent the tuner hook breaking the string is essential with loop end E strings. We cannot accept claims for strings broken by the adjuster hook. Click here to purchase this item.

Good standard strings, apart from the E.
3 out of 3 found the following review helpful

Pros: As expected, the usual standard Dominant strings at a good price. I have not used many other makes but these suit me.

Cons: I am not too fond of the E string and usually replace it with something less bright to match the rest of the set. I believe a lot of people do this, so maybe they could introduce an option in the set.

Other: Great service again from String Zone.

Violin strings which aren't made out of cats.
4 out of 6 found the following review helpful

Pros: I have been playing Tomastik Dominant violin strings for over forty years. Obviously, I have now got chronic arthritis in my left elbow which means I can't extend my arm fully and which basically hurts all the time, but you can't blame this on Irish fiddle music entirely. The great thing about this set of violin strings is that there are four of them, which is exactly the number the violin needs. It is important to remember that the thin one goes at one end and the fat one at the other end. A violin is not a ukulele.

Cons: The top e string is always a problem with Tomastik Dominants. It doesn't quite balance in tone or volume and when it gets even a teeny bit worn it is harder to tune exactly. I always buy a Wondertone solo E and keep the TD as a reserve. Always keep your old strings. In an emergency they will tune up more reliably than a new one which wants to stretch like a yoga teacher before getting down to any work.

Other: I bought my violin in Tetbury but the best one I ever played was in a workshop in the via Giulia in Rome. It cost 20,000 euros.

Good quality with balanced tone.
1 out of 1 found the following review helpful

Pros: The Thomastik Dominant strings are, in my opinion and experience as a performer and teacher, the most reliable strings. They produce a very good sound and are very hard to break. Their tonal quality is well balanced and may be suitable for all kinds of instruments, old and modern ones.

Cons: None

Very good quality of tone & value for money.
1 out of 1 found the following review helpful

Pros: I have used Dominant violin strings for decades now & always find the last ver well, they stay in tune & produce a lovely sound. I use them on both of my violins, with the more refined tone of my orchestral instrument & with the more robust sound of my Romanian teaching/folk music violin. I think they are good value.

Cons: They need sometime to play in, depending on how much playing you do.

Other: I find String Zone very efficient in despatching my strings & they were competitively priced.
